W UMa is positioned at 09 43 45.5 +55 57 09.1 (J 2000.0) northwest of φ Ursae Majoris. It is identified as SAO 27364. This is the prototype of W UMa eclipsing binaries, now classified as EW contact binaries. It was discovered by the German astronomers Müller (1851–1925) and Kempf (1856–1920) in the early 20th century (Müller & Kempf, 1903). According to Bilir o. fl. (2005), the primary star (A) is identical to the Sun (1.19 Mʘ and Rʘ 1.084), but the secondary (B) is smaller (0.57 Mʘ and Rʘ 0.775). References for this star are provided at the Simbad database (W UMA), and eclipse predictions at the VSX database (W UMa).
